Migration from DISOSS using
Departure
Conrail, headquartered in Philadelphia, PA, is the largest
railroad operator in the Northeastern US with over 24,000 employees and
some 11,700 miles of routes.
Conrail has been running IBM's DISOSS Library system for
many years but usage has decreased as the company has turned towards
Client/Server systems. One of the key areas using DISOSS was the Legal
area. Over many years, the Legal department has filed contracts, revisions
and supporting documents in the DISOSS library, amounting to some 50,000
documents. A business case revealed that moving this application to PC LAN
would justify itself within a very short time. The biggest challenge,
however, was in accurately extracting these documents from DISOSS.
To address this issue, Conrail turned to ReSoft
International and IMI Computing to provide the Departure product. As part
of the contract, a consultant worked on site at Conrail to install, tailor
and run the extraction process.
"There were so many potential complications getting this critical information
out of DISOSS" commented Beth Schecher, Conrail's Director of
Systems Software. "Given the nature of the documents, the implication of leaving
behind just one document was very severe. Departure coupled with the Consulting
support did the job for us".
