Integrating mainframe e-mail with the Internet
City of Long Beach has over 1,200 users of e-mail, based on IBM's
OfficeVision/MVS product. The e-mail system has been installed for some years
and has successfully streamlined internal communications throughout the City.
As electronic messaging has grown, the need to communicate with bodies external
to the City has increased correspondingly. In particular, the Internet is
seen as a means of communicating with the outside world.
To meet this requirement, City of Long Beach has installed
OfficePath/SNADS from
ReSoft International to provide the gateway from OfficeVision/MVS to the
Internet. Coupled with a software firewall and Internet SMTP access unit
residing on an IBM AS/400 which was originally developed by the City of Los
Angeles, the City is able to provide direct Internet access for its user
base. Users will be able to send and receive messages from Internet by addressing
the messages in the same way as they can internally.
