Using  Topper  to monitor  worldwide messaging systems

To help maintain its leadership, e-mail is a key part of the company's communication infrastructure, enabling fast reaction and co-operation around the globe. The company's e-mail traffic is handled by Microsoft Exchange and Unix servers.

With such a large and complex environment, monitoring the availability of each component in the network becomes critical to guaranteeing timely delivery of e-mail anywhere across the world.

To address the monitoring and reporting requirements, Lucent upgraded its monitoring tool to TOPPER from ReSoft International. "Topper gives us great flexibility in measuring delivery times between different parts of the network through its support of multiple entry points" explained Jim Witthoff, who led the team that selected Topper for use within Lucent.

Lucent has implemented Topper servers in three geographical regions, with both Exchange and Unix (SMTP/POP) entry points in each region.
