"The Department of Computer Science at the University of Virginia has
been a beta test site for the GlobalCerts SecureMail Server for nearly one
year. GlobalCerts has finally made secure communication easy enough to deploy
and use on a large scale. In particular, the automatic management of the
key infrastructure (Public Key Infrastructure) for users makes secure
communications manageable for the average user. 'Deploying' the service
was absolutely trivial: GlobalCerts set the server up for us, and all we had
to do was show users how to make a one-time change to their e-mail
software configuration. Our regular mail service was completely
unaffected; we didn't modify our existing infrastructure at all.
For the IT staff, the system requires almost no work, certainly far
less than most so-called 'turn-key' solutions. Other PKI solutions we had
considered required too much time from system administrators, both in
setting up the infrastructure, and more importantly, in time spent
supporting end-users. Previously, only two of our users have ever used any
kind of public-key cryptography on their mail--and only when it was
absolutely necessary--because of the hassle involved in collecting and
using keys. Now, at the Department of Computer Science at University of
Virginia, users can send mail securely without any additional steps - and
with no increase in support calls either." "We installed the system during normal business hours, and my
users never even knew the GlobalCerts system was now part of our mail flow
until I told them that they could immediately begin sending encrypted
email messages. No changes were needed at the users’ PCs and we don’t
have to manage certificate files on individual desktops. We are really
pleased with the system." "Our clients have been very accepting of the idea and definitely
like the fact that we secure their sensitive information. The secure email
lets them know that we take security very seriously. We have had no
resistance to the need for them to enter a password. None of the
recipients have had problems getting the email and even AOL users get them
just fine."
