OfficePath -
Streamlining the worldwide e-mail system
Zurich Insurance is one of the largest insurance companies in the world,
operating in many international countries. For computer processing in the
United States, Zurich has established the Zurich Megacenter in Schaumburg,
Illinois, a datacenter providing computer services on behalf of four of the
Zurich operating subsidiaries: Maryland Insurance, Fidelity & Deposit,
Zurich American and Universal Underwriting.
Historically, electronic mail in each operating company had developed from
different backgrounds including IBM's OfficeVision/MVS and OfficeVision/400,
Attachmate ZIPmail, Lotus cc:Mail, Computer Associates Bulletin, as well
as the internally developed system, ZPOST. As each company has been integrated
into the Zurich group, the need for inter-communication between the 17,000
users has flourished as well as the need for communicating with headquarters
in Switzerland, the Internet and other subsidiary companies around the world.
Until recently, DISOSS had been in place as the router between these systems.
As part of an ongoing streamlining and consolidation process within the
Megacenter, Zurich agreed to implement
OfficePath/SNADS
to replace DISOSS as the routing product.
The effect has been dramatic. The Megacenter was able to implement the
integration between the various e-mail systems over a period of two weeks.
"Much of this was due to the facilities available in OfficePath" comments
Barry Neff, Manager of Technical Services. "OfficePath allowed us to define
generic nodes instantly on-line, saving an incredible amount of time and
effort". As the use of OfficePath has grown, Zurich has also found the
diagnostic tools and utilities very beneficial for more easily tracking and
auditing mail through the network.
