compliance, distributing policies such as codes of conduct policy, corporate
ethics policy, corporate governance principles as well as managing codes of
conduct, codes of ethics, corporate policy development, corporate policy
measurement, corporate policy distribution and managing professional conduct.
Over the last decade, many organizations have recognized that risks related to their use of the Internet and
email come not just from external sources but increasingly from within. To address the issue of human misuse,
many firms have gone to great lengths to devise policies for employees on the acceptable use of IT systems
and networks, such as use of email and the Internet.
But do such Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) provide an effective guard against misuse and the various
consequences and penalties?
We think there’s more to creating an effective AUP than meets the eye, especially at a time when the potential
for misuse is expanding and the consequences are increasingly severe. In this paper we explore why the
majority of AUPs are ineffective, often not understood, poorly managed, and represent more of a token
gesture than a comprehensive and sustainable approach to risk management.
