INTERNAL INVESTIGATIONS. Unlock a window into important e-mail communications
using Firstview. Who was involved? What was said? When was it said? Who else did they
tell? Firstview can help determine the answers to these crucial, case-altering questions.
For example, the CEO of your company informs you that the Board of Directors for your
company is interested in all information relating to stock option packages issued in the last
two years. The CEO indicates that the company Controller may have backdated the grant
date on some executives’ stock options. He asks you to determine the scope of the
problem in preparation for the Board of Directors meeting. After engaging your IT
department to gain access to several key e-mail accounts, you create a case in Firstview
named “Stock Option Investigation” and analyze the information displayed on the
communication, subject, and timeline graphs. You are able to locate several key e-mails
between the Controller and Chief Financial Officer revealing a blatant stock option
backdating scheme.
EARLY CASE ASSESSMENT. When litigation is likely, or as soon as a complaint arrives
on your desk, you need to assess the merits of the case against your corporation. Using
Firstview to see e-mail communication relating to the issues in the suit, general counsel
can form their legal strategies and determine whether to settle the case or hire outside
counsel to contest the claims.

For example, a former employee files a civil suit alleging gender discrimination against
you. To help you evaluate the merit of the claims, you ask your IT department to access
the former employee’s e-mail mailbox, as well as the mailboxes of all of the former
employee’s immediate co-workers and direct supervisor. You open Firstview, create a case
named “Employee Gender Discrimination”, and begin to analyze the communications
between the employees implicated in the suit. Using the timeline, subject, and
communications graphs in Firstview, you chart the key discriminating communications.

ELECTRONIC DISCOVERY. As a paralegal or in-house counsel, you can use Firstview to
prepare for e-discovery by pre-filtering the data and intelligently identifying custodians based on communication
patterns, time periods and sent and received e-mail information. By targeting your data
collection efforts and only submitting custodians that you know contain potentially
relevant data to your e-discovery service provider, you will minimize e-discovery costs.

For example, your corporation is sued for trademark and patent infringement. It is your
responsibility to identify custodians, keywords, and timeframes and begin preparing and
collecting data to be sent to the corporation’s e-discovery service provider. After
engaging your IT department to gain access to an e-mail storage database, you create a
case in Firstview named “E-Discovery Collection” and begin identifying key data for
discovery. You isolate key timeframes and data custodians by running searches in
Firstview. Instead of sending the entire e-mail storage database for e-discovery
processing, you create a few smaller PST files for transport to your e-discovery service
provider
