THE NEED FOR CONTROL

Connecting to the Internet puts you in touch with thousands of other networks - but it also exposes you to potential threats. Products such as firewalls are essential for controlling access to your system, but they don't deal with what is contained with in data coming through into your network.

MIMEsweeper is based on the concept of content control: looking at what is in the data stream.  Email can contain various threats, and MAILsweeper, the MIMEsweeper module that deals with email, is state-of-the-art software providing a common foundation for counteracting all of them.

Just as decisions on paper-based communications need to be made, such as disposal or filing, email messages also need to be managed. MAILsweeper can carry out archival and retrieval on a per subject, author and recipient basis, thus ensuring that no important records are deleted.

Organizations that use the Internet to send messages between offices and partners may wish to limit the locations to which users may send or receive emails. MAILsweeper can prevent email from being abused, for private use and for unauthorized email correspondence or can force the email to be protected through encryption before it leaves the internal network.

Viruses and MailBombs

Viruses can be in email attachments or as part of the header or body. The most successful current virus and logic bomb code is document-based; as most email attachments are documents, this is the easiest way to get a virus into a company.

For Virus checking, MAILsweeper acquires the email message from the host mail system. By using recursive disassembly, MAILsweeper can completely open the email and any attachments, up to 50 levels down,  so that anti-virus tools can check for viruses embedded within the data. Without using MAILsweeper to open fully all the data, anti-virus tools can easily miss encoded and ZIPped viruses and macro bombs.

MailBombs are large files in an email that are designed to clog up gateways.  MIMEsweeper can identify and trap large files, which can be parked for later delivery, quarantined for inspection or deleted completely.

SPAM Email

This is time-wasting and can tie up valuable system resources. Malicious targeting of organizations can, in some cases, lead to such large amounts of junk email being sent that the network server is overloaded and eventually crashes.

MAILsweeper has a process, Anti-SPAM Solution,  which is automatically configured to check each email message for the sender and/or receiver's email address as well as check the content of the message. Once MAILsweeper has detected undesirable content, it can either dispose of the message or return an email with an appropriate response.

Without using MAILsweeper to fully inspect all the data,  inappropriate information can still be delivered.

Leakage of Confidential Information

Large amounts of private data can be emailed out of the company at the press of a key, with no hard evidence such as a paper trail or floppy disk to show for it. Companies cannot be sure of the contents of every email that is sent out by employees. Therefore, dealing with the inadvertent or deliberate exporting of sensitive or confidential company information is becoming increasingly important.

MAILsweeper has a keyword search engine which can be configured to look for certain words or phrases which occur in your company's confidential documents. Lexical analysis looks for these words or phrases, assesses the risk (dependent on where the message is being sent to) and, depending on the result, determines what to do with the message.
