NeedTEXT Monitor for BlackBerry Enterprise Server and interaction with Blackberry Devices

BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds by Research In Motion (RIM) have become essential business tools for thousands of companies worldwide. Their ability to extend corporate email and back-office applications to mobile users have helped accelerate the pace of business in almost every industry sector.

Typically, the most senior people in the organization are the ones relying most heavily on their Blackberry device. As a result, the service-level requirement for system availability tends to be staggeringly high.

Maintaining a high performing and available BlackBerry infrastructure has therefore become critical. NeedTEXT Monitor for BlackBerry Enterprise automatically monitors the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and its interaction with the individual Blackberry Devices. This includes BES performance statistics as well as Email roundtrip tests, Battery level, Wireless signal level, last time the device made contact with the BES (to identify unused or under-utilized devices) and messages pending & processed (to monitor flow and identify blockages).

The application continually checks the essential components of the BlackBerry Enterprise network and alerts administrators to threshold faults. Multiple BlackBerry Enterprise Servers can be monitored from a single console and the user interface is entirely web-based for seamless LAN or remote access. Performance statistics can also be graphed for trend analysis.

Elimination of manual system monitoring

Organizations, with limited or no automated monitoring of their BlackBerry infrastructure, are often required to rely on manual processes to perform checks on the health of their BlackBerry system. Due to resource constrains, it is unlikely that these processes can be relied upon 24x7. Automation of BlackBerry systems monitoring and notification provides organizations with standardized 24x7 checks of their BlackBerry deployment (right down to each BlackBerry end
user). Manual processes are eliminated, thereby saving valuable IT resources that can be redirected to high value projects within the organization.

Proactive vs. reactive management

Proactive management of IT infrastructure is largely comprised of the ability to do two things: First, to persistently monitor and compare the performance of the IT system against thresholds that warn of pending issues. Second, the ability to consider the overall performance metrics of the IT system to gain a better understanding of its impact on other network components and hardware to ensure it is properly deployed. NeedTEXT Monitor for BlackBerry Enterprise Server allows organizations to perform both for their BlackBerry deployment. Accordingly, many issues are avoided before they occur. The result is decreased end user support costs and high availability.

Help desk or end user support improvement

Organizations, with limited or no automated monitoring of their BlackBerry infrastructure, are required to perform manual diagnostic procedures to determine how to resolve issues encountered by their BlackBerry end users. NeedTEXT Monitor for BlackBerry Enterprise Server provides an intuitive and consolidated web based console that displays the overall health of the BlackBerry deployment and BlackBerry end users. As a result, diagnosis can be simplified and provide resource savings to the help desk function.

Automation of Reporting

Reporting is a requirement or desire for many BlackBerry-using organizations as they look to ensure proper usage, billing, and overall administration of their BlackBerry deployment. Currently, organizations without automated reporting capabilities are required to prepare reports manually – a resource-intensive process. Otherwise, where resources are not available, organizations are forced to forego reporting processes, resulting in some exposure to inefficient investment in BlackBerry (i.e. unused BlackBerrys, carrier service troubles left unidentified, billing errors, etc.).
With the reporting capabilities of NeedTEXT Monitor for BlackBerry Enterprise Server, customized and canned reports are generated automatically, saving organizations valuable resources and helping to ensure efficient administration of their BlackBerry deployment.

KEY BENEFITS:

  1. Minimizes BlackBerry service downtime by proactively and continuously monitoring the health of BlackBerry Enterprise Server and its critical elements, and alerting administrators to events that might result in outages.
  2. Captures critical system and user performance statistics that can be used for analysis, optimization and performance tuning of the BlackBerry deployment.
  3. Increases IT efficiency by automating tasks associated with a BlackBerry implementation, that today need to be manually performed.
  4. Enables Help Desk Support by allowing help desk staff to troubleshoot BlackBerry handheld end-user calls.

SUMMARY OF USAGE CASES:

  • Monitor and manage BES 2.2, 3.6 and 4.x for all three groupware platforms: Domino, Exchange and GroupWise.
  • Manage multiple BES servers from a single, web-based monitoring console.
  • Customize monitoring thresholds to fine-tune alerts and event notifications specifically for your BlackBerry environment, including thresholds for BES application AND handheld user performance.
  • Keep a watchful eye on all key components of the BES system, including SRP connection status, BES services, latency to mail servers, physical memory and CPU load.
  • Use the industry's only true Roundtrip Message Verification to test the latency of email messages and MDS data to AND from specific end users' handhelds.
  • Detect potential hung thread conditions within BES by being alerted on stopped message flow.
  • Allow Help Desk staff to troubleshoot BlackBerry user support calls by deploying role-based privileges and access to the web-based monitoring console and key, on-demand, help desk handheld tasks.
  • Quickly locate any handheld user across all BES servers using the convenient search tool and instantly view the user's current health and performance.
  • Set up a notification list to receive alerts via email and text message / SMS.
  • Seamlessly integrate BlackBerry alerts into existing network management frameworks such as MOM, Tivoli, OpenView, AppManager, What's Up Gold and SiteScope.
  • Quickly generate and distribute User and Server reports (HTML, PDF and CSV), choosing from a list of 16 canned reports, or create a custom report with the flexible Report builder tool.
  • Identify unused handheld devices and potential cost savings by generating "inactive device" reports.
  • Audit BES licenses and users across all BES servers to determine if more licenses are required or CALs from another BES can be utilized.
