Email Legal Discovery - from novelty to common target
In a recent Special Report issued by Legato, developers of the EmailXtender Suite, the authors conclude that "...electronic discovery is no longer a novelty. Computers have become so commonplace that most court battles now involve discovery of some type of computer-stored information... Litigators often take advantage of a lack of preparation by making digital information, especially email, a key target of discovery.  The impact of being unprepared can be disastrous."

Because spam recipients must take the time to wade through and discard the garbage that bombards their inboxes to find legitimate e-mail, they are spending time away from the productive work for which they are being paid. However, convincing a decision maker about the efficacy of a spam filtering system based on its contribution to employee productivity may be a tough sell. Many decision makers are focused only on hard cost savings that accrue from a technology purchase, not soft cost benefits like improved employee productivity".

Employers look to limit non-work web use with Websense
As the Web and Web usage continue to grow, more employers seek to monitor employees' e-mail and Internet use to gauge worker productivity, limit network traffic, and prevent the spread of computer viruses. An FBI survey found that employees at 78 percent of companies had misused the Internet, and a study by IDC estimates that 30 to 40 percent of Internet surfing during work hours is not work related. An alternative to monitoring Web use and "spying" on employees is highly customized blocking software that can block specific sites entirely or enable site visits for discrete amounts of time or during certain hours of the day.
