Targeted WORM attacks strengthen the need for protection
solutions such as Avinti iSolation Server to prevent attacks from unknown threats
The speed at which hackers were able to take advantage of newly disclosed software flaws makes it vital for companies to look beyond patching to broader and more holistic measures for controlling vulnerabilities in the wake of a wave of worms this week that targeted a flaw in a Plug and Play component of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 2000 software.
The worms hit The New York Times, CNN, ABC News and Caterpillar Inc. and came less than a week after the hole they exploited was disclosed by Microsoft as part of its monthly patch-release cycle. Symantec said that it has heard from at least 100 organizations that a group of about eight viruses were targeting individual organizations and not the Internet as a whole.
The worms, caused infected systems to repeatedly restart and potentially allowed remote attackers to take control of compromised systems. The 11 or so worms that were unleashed this week served as a sobering illustration of the ability of hackers to take advantage of new flaws before many companies have a chance to patch them.
The new iSolation Server 2.0, supplements existing anti-virus technology by identifying previously unknown and targeted
threats in seemingly safe attachments such as ZIP files,
testing for and observing malicious behavior in a secure, virtual environment. Version 2.0 offers scalability to more
than 10,000 mailboxes & support for multiple servers.

Secure Email Solution As Compliance Measure to meet HIPAA regulations
York County, Pennsylvania is located in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic corridor, is comprised of seventy-two
municipalities served by forty-four county departments with 2,500 employees in total.
In conjunction with the York County HIPAA Steering Committee, the Information Technologies team identified an
immediate requirement to protect email messages containing electronic private health information. To ensure that County department communications comply with HIPAA regulations, the York County Department of Information Technologies began looking for a secure messaging solution.
"We needed a solution that would be user-friendly and easy to
deploy" said Jeffery Shiflett, Assistant Director of Information Technologies.
“It was really important to us that everyone be happy with the encryption product – our end users, our trainers, and of course, our support
staff“. Given the size of the York County IT staff, they needed to implement a security solution that could be introduced into the various County agencies without having to deploy software on the end user desktops, or requiring a complicated encryption key management infrastructure.
“The GlobalCerts SecureMail Gateway, with its SecureMessenger
feature has been a wonderful solution for us,” explains Shiflett.
“The County can now communicate securely with any Internet recipient who has an email address and a Web browser. The end-user training guide that was created for the roll-out is less than one page
long”.

AttachView gains excellent reviews in Windows IT Pro magazine
Jeff Fellinge of Windows IT Pro Magazine recently reviewed OWA
AttachView, the tool to view attachments in OWA without the security
risk of downloading and leaving attachments behind for unauthorized
users to access.
Jeff's comments include: "AttachView
installs quickly on Exchange front-end servers and supports hundreds of
file formats. The AttachView viewer lets you rotate or zoom graphical
documents. You can even view documents that are compressed in a .zip
file. AttachView provides much needed email attachment security and management features that are missing from OWA and deserves serious consideration from any company using
OWA" .
