An Information Week/Ernst &
Young survey found that almost 8 out of 10 North American companies
have lost valuable information over the past two years due to
computer viruses, hackers, bitter employees, or disasters. In
response to these overwhelming losses, 90 percent of firms are
upgrading their security, according to Sentry Market Research's
Enterprise Network Management Report.
With a 323% rise over the last
year, intellectual property theft is now costing corporate America
an estimated $24 billion annually. Some 74% of these security
breaches come from the inside.

A recent survey by EMA in
association with Wilkofsky/Gruen & Associates projected that the
number of e-mail users would double between 1996 and the year
2000, surpassing the 108 million mark. Those users are expected to
receive more than 7 trillion messages a year, with a growing
proportion of them generated by machines rather than humans.

managing, administering, and using a messaging system is $4,189 per

Despite efforts to standardize
internal e-mail programs, many large organizations are finding it
necessary to support multiple systems. Gartner Group predicts that
"by 1999, one-third of Notes sites will also have Exchange
servers installed, and one-third of Exchange sites will have Notes
servers installed." But this internal mixing and matching of
e-mail programs can make enterprise wide e-mail almost impossible to
manage.

A survey by the Society for Human
Resource Management shows that 86%of the 757 human resource
professionals polled now use e-mail, but 49% of their companies
don't train employees in the proper use of electronic messaging
and 48% don't have written e-mail policies. Sixty-three percent say
their firms do not officially allow personal use of the company
e-mail system, but do not monitor messages. Six percent had
been asked to produce copies of e-mail messages as evidence for
